It is certainly an interesting time to strike out on my own, considering the less than glowing state of the economy and the rather palpable collective financial anxiety in this country, state, and lovely city, Portland. But in this time, I also see a lot of opportunity. It's a chance for some small businesses and non-profits to take a good look at themselves, find their weaknesses and grow stronger. Hopefully, if the Fed is right, just in time for the long sought economic upswing!

Taking the plunge!
A week and a half ago, I left the security and stability of my full-time job as a bookkeeper for a non-profit hospice to focus on my own venture. It was not an easy decision to move on. Where I worked was supportive and rewarding and my co-workers wonderfully unique people driven by doing good for those in need. But in volunteering with Mercy Corps Northwest and helping their clients understand budgets and financial statements, I found a calling truer to my own skill set and to my vision of building a community through small, grass-roots enterprises.
