Only a few days into his fundraising campaign, Marcus has met his goal. With his generous spirit, authentic being, and brilliant humor, it is no surprise he's garnered incredible support (in donations and promised taco deliveries).
While the Affordable Care Act means self employed professionals like Marcus and myself are able to procure our own health insurance without the barrier of pesky preexisting conditions, the reality is even with insurance medical costs will be extensive. The other reality is as a self employed person with no Paid Time Off or leave pay, taking necessary time off for any significant period means zero income. In Marcus' case this may be for half a year (though I imagine he'll try to power through sooner if he's not literally held down).
Never one to ask for much from anyone while giving freely so much, I suspect his goal is a modest underestimation of the true costs of what he will be facing very soon.
Accordingly, I shift my shameless plug for support from meeting his goal, to blowing it out of the water. In a nation where there is little support for those like Marcus, it is a matter of community action. Let's give Marcus the opportunity to not simply survive but to thrive.
I mean, this is a man who makes house calls for IT and computer emergencies of all variations. He is also a brilliant man, who in facing the battle of his life can make me laugh like no other. And that is priceless.
With gratitude,
Vega
